2000/07/30 - Sunday, Nationals All-Star Tournament in Buena Park.

7:00 AM Game: Los Altos (15) vs. Clairemont (9) - Once again matched up against Los Altos, Clairemont emerged from the 1st inning with a 7-5 lead. Los Altos defense then woke up and held Clairemont to those 7 runs into the 5th, while generating runs of their own. Wet grass and balls plus a lack of sleep didn't help Clairemont as they lost their final game of the All-Star tournament. Medals were presented, hugs were given, and everyone headed over to watch Clairemont's 2A girls in their game against Mililani (HI).

2000/07/29 - Saturday, Nationals All-Star Tournament in Buena Park.

9:00 pM Game: Clairemont (9) vs. Vacaville (6) - As their first game in the Aloha bracket, Clairemont took on 'Cow Town' under the lights in what was to be an incredible outing. Vacaville generated an early lead as the score was 3-5 (Vacaville). It looked like Clairemont would go down in defeat in the 6th inning as Clairemont was down to their last strike. But with 2 outs and 2 strikes, Kyrstin Gemar hit a pop-fly to short that Vacaville couldn't quite grab, which started a huge 2-out rally for Clairemont. Hit after hit followed, loading up the bases. Jennifer Price took command of the inning with a 3-RBI triple to give Clairemont the lead. Good defensive work held Vacaville to one additional run in the bottom of the 6th, securing Clairemont's victory. Final score, Clairemont 9, Vacaville 6.

2000/07/28 - Friday, Nationals All-Star Tournament in Buena Park. By one of those strange twists of fate so prevalent in softball/baseball, Clairemont 3A was awarded a slot in the National Tournament.

5:00 PM Game: Los Altos (10) vs. Clairemont (7) - Their first game ended in a heartbreaker as Clairemont was unable to hold Los Altos in the opening 3A game. As the box score shows, it was fairly close but Clairemont just couldn't generate the necessary runs to overcome the Los Altos lead in the bottom of the 6th inning. Clairemont moves to the Aloha bracket for their next game Saturday evening at 9:00 PM.

2000/07/16 - Sunday Second-Chance Tournament All-Star games in Lakeside...

12:00 Game: Clairemont 15U All-Stars met University City to determine which team would get to play in Buena Park for the National All-Star Championships. Despite a hard, well-played game, Clairemont lost to UC 6-4. It looked to be a close but winning game as Clairemont took and held the lead through the first 3 innings, ending the 3rd with Clairemont up 3-1. In the bottom of the 4th UC opened up driving in 5 runs on 6 hits. Clairemont fought back and brought in a run in the 5th. 3-up, 3-down for both sides in the 6th inning held the score 6-4 UC. With only 3 minutes left, Clairemont scurried onto the field to try and reclaim the lead in the top of the 7th.

In the top of the 7th, Michael Hrenko and 'Chef Stef' both grounded out at 1st. Jennifer Price smashed a grounder to right-center for a triple. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Kyrstin Gemar hit a grounder past 1st into right field. Unfortunately for Clairemont, the UC right-fielder threw the ball to 1st 'just in time' for the 3rd out.

Sarah 'Shorty" Fiedler pitched a good game for UC, pitching all 7 innings. Chrissy Boehme pitched the first 3 1/2 innings while Ashley Reed relieved to pitch the remainder. Except for the 4th inning, Clairemont did an admirable job holding UC to just 4 hits and 1 run.

Thus ends the All-Star series for Clairemont 3A. The girls did a great job and represented Clairemont well. We're all proud of your performance and look forward to seeing you in action in Fall Travel Sox. Have a great summer.

2000/07/15 - Saturday Second-Chance Tournament All-Star games in Lakeside...

12:00 Game: Clairemont 15 and under all stars met Lemon Grove Spring Valley in their opening game of the Lakeside Second Chance tournament, losing the game 11 - 1. Clairemont fell behind early, giving up 7 runs in the 2nd inning, with all runs scoring with 2 outs. Clairemont's lone run came in the 4th when Katie Steege legged out a slow roller to short, stole second and scored on Chrissy Boehme's line drive single to right. Clairemont would only collect 3 hits for the game, accounting for the only Clairemont runners who reached base safely. LGSV pitching was supurb, striking out 7 and allowing no walks. In their win, the highly favored LGSV collected only 9 singles for the game but were aided by 12 walks from Clairemont pitching. With the loss, Clairemont dropped to the aloha bracket to face Lakeside who earlier lost to University City's "Shorty" by a 5 - 3 score.

4:00 Game: In its 2nd game of the day, Clairemont rebounded to soundly defeat Lakeside 12 - 1. With the bats sizzling, Clairemont took a 12-0 lead into the top of the 4th, pounding out 10 hits and advancing 17 runners safely to base in 3 innings. Chrissy Boehme and Ashley Reed combined pitching for the near shutout, giving up the lone run in the 4th inning with 2 outs. Lakeside managed only 4 singles and saw only 6 runners reach base safely. Jennifer Creager, Chrissy Boehme, and Katie Steege doubled in the game. Both Chrissy Boehme and Michael Hrenko went 2 - 2 at the plate and every member of the team reached base at least once. Next up for Clairemont would be Menifee who earlier lost to University City 17 - 11.

6:00 Game: It appeared as if the Clairemont all stars would make quick work of Menifee as they retired the first three batters in the top of the first inning and then pushed across 3 runs in their half and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out. But a couple of pop up outs in the infield prevented the rout and the game was on. With the evening sun in the face of the Clairemont fielders, Menifee came back in the 2nd to score 4 runs on hits mostly lost in the bright light in the sky. Menifee again mounted a threat in the third, loading the bases, but failed to score as the Clairemont defense came through. The game would then be won by Clairemont in the bottom of the third as they scored 4 to take the lead for good at 7 - 4. The remainder of the game went scoreless by both teams for the final 7 - 4 Clairemont win. Jennifer Price provided the big blows in the game, doubling in the 1st for 2 rbi and again in the 3rd. Kyrstin Gemar collected a double and a single, scoring 2 runs. Chrissy Boehme and Stefanie Perricone also scored twice each. On the defensive side, Katie Steege at 2nd and Ashley Reed at short and Chrissy Boehme on the mound shut down Menifee in the 5th and 6th innings to seal the win. The victory puts Clairemont into the final aloha bracket game against the loser of the University City, Lemon Grove Spring Valley game. With one more victory, Clairemont would assure itself of at least a 2nd place finish and a trip to Nationals.

2:00 PM Game 6: Clairemont (13) vs. Santee (1) - Having lost their game to Valley Mesa in Game 3, Santee entered the Aloha bracket to once again match up with Clairemont. Unlike that first meeting, the second was decidedly more lopsided as Clairemont led the way out of the 1st inning 5-1. Santee was held from making any further runs through 5th inning.

Clairemont's bats were hot as hit after hit flew into the field, bringing runners to base and across the plate. Of the 21 runners to reach 1st, only three were by virtue of a base-on-balls. Triples were hit by Jennifer Creager, Stefanie Perricone, and Michael Hrenko, while almost everyone else hit doubles or singled.

Meanwhile Clairemont defense did a great job allowing only one run in the 1st inning. Clairemont played good, tight ball for this game and reaped the rewards with their victory.

4:00 PM Game 7: Clairemont (2) vs. Valley Mesa (7) - Having lost Game 4 to Alpine, Valley Mesa entered the Aloha bracket to spar with Clairemont. Clairemont's bats were largely ineffective in this game with only eight successful hits in 26 at-bats. Clairemont's defense wasn't bad, only allowing Valley Mesa to score in 3 out of 6 innings. Unfortunately the other 3 innings saw Valley Mesa bring in a total of 7 runs. At the top of the 7th with Clairemont down 7-0 and a shut-out looming, Clairemont managed to bring in two runs (Jennifer Price and Katie Steege). Alas, it wasn't enough as the final out was made and Valley Mesa triumphed to be assured of at least 2nd place in the tournament.

Doubles were hit by Katie Steege, Chrissy Boehme, 'Chef' Stef, and Kyrstin Gemar. Clairemont's 2 runs were earned as Jennifer Price was brought home on an RBI-double by Katie Steege, who later stole home for the second and final Clairemont run.

As so often happens, Clairemont played some good games and some not-so-good games. But the ladies played hard, played fairly, and had a good time throughout. Though they didn't win, they can nevertheless be proud of their performance both athletically and through their sportsmanship. All have shown great improvement this year, and for those that return next year Clairemont can plan to give the competition a run for their money. This reporter would like to thank the Clairemont players for a fun and exciting season. Have a great summer!

6:00 PM Game 8: Valley Mesa (2) vs. Alpine (1)

2000/07/08 - Saturday All-Star games...

10:00 AM Game 1: Santee (10) vs. Clairemont (9) - The Clairemont 15 and under all star team opened the 2000 Bobby Sox all-star tournament with a heart breaking loss to Santee 10 - 9 in extra innings. Spotting Santee to a 7 - 1 lead after 3 innings Clairemont rallied back to eventually take an 8 - 7 lead into the 6th and what should have been the last inning, only to see Santee tie the game and send it into the international tie breaker. With a runner starting at second base, Clairemont would again take the lead 9 - 8 with a chance to come away victorious. However, Santee also scored their starting runner to tie the game and eventually won on a bloop single to right field.

Trailing by 6 runs into the top of the 4th, with 2 out and the bases loaded, Kyrstin Gemar sent a smashing drive to right center for a double that cleared the bases and closed the gap to 7 - 4. Chrissy Boehme came on to pitch and kept the game close by pitching 2 scoreless innings. Then, in the 6th, Clairemont rallied for 4 runs aided again by Kyrstin Gemar's game tying double that followed Jennifer Creager's RBI triple. Kyrstin then scored the go ahead run on Michael Hrenko's close call single. But the defense couldn't hold Santee in the bottom of the inning as Santee scored 2 to win. Santee would go on to lose their next game to Valley Mesa by the 10 run rule to set up a rematch with Clairemont in Game 5, Sunday, at 2:00 PM.

2:00 PM Game 2: Alpine (15) vs. So. El Cajon (3)

4:00 PM Game 3: Valley Mesa 10 run ruled Santee

6:00 PM Game 5: Clairemont (12) vs. South El Cajon (2) - Clairemont 15 and under all stars rebounded from their disappointing first game loss to defeat South El Cajon 12 - 2. Taking advantage of superb pitching, defense and offense, Clairemont played to their potential, playing a near flawless game to end Saturday's play. Chrissy Boehme pitched a perfect 2 innings while Stefanie Perricone allowed 2 runs on only 1 hit. The defense sparkled in support of their pitchers, quickly retiring the first 7 batters before a walk broke up the perfect game. In the top of the 4th, a looping fly ball down the line in right field was caught by second baseman Katie Steege and Michael Hrenko shot out of the catcher's box to grab a ground ball in front of the plate and throw the runner out at first. The lone South El Cajon hit then came with 2 outs in the 4th and final inning.

Clairemont all but won the game in the second as they batted around to score 9 runners. With Kyrstin Gemar on first, Michael Hrenko lined a shot to the gap in right center for an RBI triple. Later, with bases loaded, Karlee Halshaw emptied the bases with a triple to right. Ashley Reed brought 2 more home with a single. But the big blow in the game came off the bat of Jennifer Price who sent a towering fly to left center that missed going over the fence by "that much" as the ball bounced at the base of the fence for an RBI double. Michael Hrenko added a double in the 3rd followed later by Angela Pacheco's double. The game ended in the bottom of the 4th when Katie Steege, who singled and eventually advanced to third, scored the 12th run on Chrissy Boehme's grounder to third. Next up for Clairemont is a rematch with Santee at 2:00 PM, Sunday.
